Already in precolombian civilizations, as well as in that of the Aztec, the idea of death was intimately
connected to that of ‘rebirth’.
Even now in Mexico popular tradition holds that every year on the Dia de los Muertos (1-2 November)
souls return from after-life to embrace their friends and relations in a get-together and to enjoy earthly
delicacies. In order to welcome them appropriately, tombs are decorated with brightly-colored flowers
and little private ‘altars’ called ofrendas adorned with photos, drinks, cigarettes, etc. that had been
particularly appreciated in life by the departed one.
Death is thus experienced in this part of the world in a happy and light-hearted way.
In honour of Calavera Catrina, the Catrina ring, the skull of a Grande Dame, is the ring of those who do
not take themselves too seriously. Life is basically a game, a game to win or to lose, and it makes no
sense to remain in the shadows and to hide one’s hand. The world is made up of colors, feelings,
emotions, all of which to be lived fully.
